ARIZONA TAX CREDITS AVAILABLE IN 2016

1. Working poor credit is available for cash/check/credit card contributions you make during 2016 to a Qualifying Charitable Organization. The charity has to meet some criteria related to supporting the working poor. Approved charities’ names are listed on the Department of Revenue’s website.

Taxpayers filing as “single” and “head of household” status may claim a maximum credit of $400. Taxpayers filing as “married filing separate” may claim a maximum credit of $400. Taxpayers filing as “married filing joint” may claim a maximum credit of $800. 

2. You may claim a credit for making a donation to a School Tuition Organization    for scholarships to private schools. The maximum amount you can contribute is $1,087 (single and head of household) and $2,173 (married filing joint) as detailed below.

Taxpayers filing as “single” and “head of household” may claim a maximum credit amount for tax year 2016 of $545 for single, unmarried head of household and married filing separate filers and $1,090 for married filing joint filers. Approved charities’ names are listed on the Department of Revenue’s website.

If you exceed the amounts in the paragraph above, you can claim an additional credit for donations to a School Tuition Organization. The maximum additional credit amount that may be taken for tax year 2016 is $542 for single, unmarried head of household and married filing separate filers and $1,083 for married filing joint filers.

3. You may claim a credit for making contributions or paying fees to a public school for support of extracurricular activities or character education programs. The Arizona Department of Revenue does not maintain a list of eligible schools but public and charter schools generally qualify.

Taxpayers filing as “single” and “head of household” status may claim a maximum credit of $200. Taxpayers filing as “married filing separate” may claim a maximum of $200. Taxpayers that file as “married filing joint” may claim a maximum credit of $400.

4. You may claim a credit for making contributions to the Arizona Military Family Relief Fund. The Arizona Military Family Relief Fund is administered by the Arizona Department of Veterans’ Services, so support will go to Arizona military families in need. The credit is the smaller of the donated amount: $200 if single, $400 if married filing jointly, or the amount of the state tax you owe.

To make this donation, write a check or money order out to the Military Family Relief Fund. Include your name, address and the last four digits of your social security number on the check and mail to the address below. The first $1,000,000 in donations will qualify for the tax credit.

5. You may claim a tax credit for cash/check/credit card contributions you make to a Qualifying Foster Care Charitable Organization. Approved Qualifying Foster Care Charitable Organizations’ names are listed on the Department of Revenue website.

Taxpayers filing as “single” and “head of household” status may claim a maximum credit of $500*. Taxpayer’s filing as “married filing separate” may claim a maximum credit of $500*. Taxpayers that file as “married filing joint” may claim a maximum credit of $1,000*.
